Three Jacks, original pastel painting

My pastel painting of "Three Jacks" is a triangular tight composition that I sketched from six different photos; one of which, was by my friend Peg Kay of Alexandria, VA. I focused on the unique pulpits covering the jacks and captured their fuzzy texture using "buttery" soft pastels on acid-free, black velvet art board.

The dark green and wine-brown hardwood frame and the mats I selected are perfect for this unique piece of artwork. Without and within the artwork there is unity, a marriage so to speak – exact colors, the outer suede mat is the same texture as the velvet board, creating a soothing woodsy presentation.

A delightful memory from my childhood, our North American native forest species, commonly called Jack-in-the-Pulpit, in bloom on the forest floor was something to marvel at but not touch and never remove a plant. We were warned at an early age that it would die.

My original painting of "Three Jacks" began as a composite of six different photos, one of which was by my friend Peg Kay of Alexandria VA. To begin my "portrait" of these intriguing plants, I chose the black velvet acid-free art board that I had liked so much for Kissing the Dawn. To capture the fascinating shape, great color variations within this single species, and its unique flower petals ("pulpit") that cover the bright green spathe (the "Jack"), I sketched three flowers with white pastel pencil in a triangular tight composition. Then I turned my attention to capturing their texture by realistically painting with "buttery" soft pastels on my "ideal" substrate.
