In 3D work the artist builds out from a platform or base. The build can become something  human, animal or completely imagined. AKaren rexrode certain object may spark a process, begin a love affair with how this piece will begin a a story or evolve into a key component of something much larger. It takes a lot of mistakes and experience to understand how so many pieces will be placed together; how will they join each other and in what order? Paint a background first? Screw, glue, and/or nail? These are my constant questions and it's a challenge that I enjoy, like an architect might love the design process, or a carpenter loves the puzzle that becomes a living space.
In my assemblage the various components are bound by an epoxy clay. Mixed in equal halves, it completely hardens in 12 hours, no heat required. This is the only way to unite the objects, carefully built from a core base. Finished work may contain metal, plastic, resin, clay, ceramic, or all of the above. The final painting makes the disparate components come together. I use acrylic paint, layer after layer, usually with washes of color. Any piece will require a lot of drying time between each coat of paint.
My goal is to repurpose items, put them together so they look like they belong and then alter and age them. I welcome the look of rust, corrosion, lead, and old patinas. A bit of fantasy, imagination and humor begin and complete each project.
