Fine Art - Painting in watercolor, acrylics, oil, pastels; pencil/charcoal drawing and mixed media
Welcome to my art world. For over 45 years, I've lived beside and painted Chesapeake waters, taught classes in its marshes, swam its shores, and studied its salty waters all the way to the Gulf Stream and beyond. During that time, I created over 300 paintings in watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and oil. That's the indefinable "thing" you see/feel in my Art Realism – a deep understanding and love of nature.
You can have my artwork "your way" from framed originals to fine-art prints on your wall. Click on any image below that speaks to you and take a few minutes to "customize" how you want your fine art print to look on your wall. When you are ready, take a look at it in Wall Preview or using your phone or digital tablet you can actually view it in Augmented Reality by standing 10 feet away from the wall where you want it to hang in your home or office.
Not only am I an award-winning Artist but also a Scientist with 30+ years experience as a professional oceanographer, marine ecologist and diver. I'm a published scientific illustrator and author of 50 science journal articles and several books. My in-depth knowledge of animal and plant biology and love of nature has deeply influenced not only what subjects I choose to paint but how I render them.
With a passion for detail, I begin each of my photo-realistic paintings with a pencil sketch of the subject(s), establish a loose background, then "build my story" with fine layers of paint to achieve greater intensity of color and an overall impression of 3-dimension.
